Termites

Termites, often referred to as white ants due to their white, or creamy colour, are social insects that live in colonies like ants and bees numbering into the millions. They are the most common and most destructive pest that we treat here in South Australia with three different species calling SA home. Causing millions of dollars a year to Australian homes, termites cause greater damage than fires, storms, and floods combined.

Gaining access to a structure in several different ways termites consume timber from the inside out. Sometimes termites have eaten away the structural integrity of the timber, such as a skirting board, door jam or architrave so a slight bump or pressure against them will easily expose the damage. Termites are after the cellulose, an organic compound found in wood and plants. All species of termites live off cellulose, meaning that they not only consume wooden structures they will also feed on plants, cardboard, and paper.

Termites construct mud tunnels to gain hidden access to a structure and provide themselves with a safe environment to travel. This is often the way a homeowner finds out that they have or have had termites.
