Fleas
Fleas are a small type of wingless parasite measuring 2-8 mm in length with a flattened appearance that enables them to quickly move through their host’s hair whilst covered with a series of bristles and combs that assist them in clinging to the host.
Preferring warm humid environments, fleas breed mainly in the warmer months, inhabiting warm-blooded animals. They feed off the blood of humans and animals such as dogs and cats. Flea bites are irritating and look like small red spots due to the injection of flea saliva at the time of biting to prevent the blood coagulating. They use a wide range of hosts so diseases can be transferred from one host to another.
Fleas lay their eggs in hidden areas such as carpet, rugs, upholstery or cracks in the floor. There are three main species of flea that infest humans:
- Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis)
- Dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis)
- Human flea (Pulex irritans).
How Greens can help you
The first step to successfully treating fleas is to have an expert identify that it is a flea and not a mite of some type. Our experts will inspect the affected, identify the real reason behind the flea infestation and make hygiene recommendations to help you avoid their return and treat all areas necessary, internally and externally.
It is important to understand the egg cycle of a flea as a follow up treatment will be necessary to break the life cycle.
