Cockroaches are a highly successful group of insects whose origins extend back at least 300 million years. They breed rapidly and are highly resilient, transmitting bacteria infecting food items where food is prepared and consumed. A cockroach infestation creates a nasty odour that taints everything they touch and can cause serious illnesses including salmonella, dysentery, and gastroenteritis. This can be reduced by not leaving waste or uncovered food in the kitchen area and eradicating moisture from untidy floors.

Their wide distribution and close association with humans, coupled with the high frequency with which they carry human diseases, in and on their bodies, have given them a very high pest status in most parts of the world.

The most common cockroaches we treat here in South Australia are:

  • German – the most wide spread and successful cockroach. Adults are light amber-brown with body length 12-15mm. Most commonly found in food preparation areas.
  • Oriental – grows up to 25mm and is dark brown to black colour and most commonly found in food preparation areas.
  • American – red brown colour growing up to 40mm and is generally found in drains.
  • Smokybrown – grows to approximately 35mm and is generally found outdoors.
